after using the old WADKIN disc and bobbin units I really didn't expect much from this 12" unit---but without stating it's size limitations which are obvious---under 6" of useable linear base. (you can get the full 12" if you remove the guard) but unless you are used to using even this size machine it is not advisable as it can come back and bite you and this little unit has more than adequate power.--I will add that it has a limited 5 year guarantee and my experience of RECORD after sales service is excellent---I purchased a Dx 1000 dust extraction unit which is a must with these machines--had trouble with the switch after 1 year--RECORD replaced the switch within 3 days--really helpful and professional service--can't fault them to be fair.---DO NOT be tempted with the cheaper units--and there are loads out there CLARKE-------------etc.they do not compare. The Record disc and table are cast iron---majority of others are either pressed steel or more likely aluminium--don't even think about it --go for the RECORD--you won't regret it.Read full review

I'd been considering one of these for sometime and had the opportunity to see one in action, worked by a joiner so took the plunge on his recommendation. It's not (for me at least) an every day tool like a drill is however when I put it to use it works brilliantly. It can smooth work pieces too small for an orbital or palm sander and it can eat up the waste when it comes shaping wood. I needed a number of drawer pulls which I'd tried to cut to shape first with a scroll saw and then with a router, neither satisfactorily. Knocked out more than a dozen in a mater of minutes using this. Don't be deceived by it's compact size, this is no lightweight! It's not something you want to be moving all the time - unless you're built like Schwarzenegger which I'm most certainly not! However, its weight means it's not moving all over the place when in use. There are cheaper options however they're generally smaller, don't look to be as well made or as robust and I doubt they're backed by a five year warranty. I haven't always made successful choices of hardware for my workshop and for me the acid test is, after having a chance to use it, would I still buy it and in this case the answer is most definitely yes.Read full review

Typically robust machine from record power. Disc is flat, as is table. Easy to adjust square. Only let down by rubbish quality sanding disc supplied. Change for a decent one, and you won't be disappointed.
