Great bit of kit, but fitting is not for the budding amateur
I have previously fitted a towbar to an XC 90, so bought this thinking it would be a similar job...ie difficult, fiddly, knuckle skinning but doable. It is not. The first thing to bear in mind is that this is not a Ford OEM part. With the XC90 it was, so it was very much 'plug and play'. Witter make this for Ford and it fits the Galaxy, SMAX and Mondeo. So it's generic! INSTRUCTIONS. These are provided by Witter and are rubbish. The number of screws to release the rear bumper is wrong (I found six more not mentioned). Look at this instead You Tube 'how to fit SMAX tow bar' by TEMTime (it is MUCH clearer!). BOLTS. These come lacquered to prevent rust. Mine were so lacquered they had NO thread on them. I could not burn it or rub it off, even with a wire brush drill bit. The ... I could not burn it or rub it off, even with a wire brush drill bit. The bolts come on a bolt strap that is ONLY there to allow you to feed them into the channel and locate them. DO NOT waste your time. I went to Wickes and bought six M10 nuts and bolts. I popped a blob of superglue onto the bolt heads, stuck them onto the main brackets and inserted them into the channels, locating the bolts in the corresponding holes. This was enough to get the bolts on and start to get them hand tight. I had a very long breaker bar that I was able to put a socket on to allow them to get torqued up, but you might be able to get them really had tight and then allow friction of the bolt head to torque them up. I the binned the bolt straps...total waste of time. ELECTRICS. The kit comes with a full electric kit as well as a retracting 7 PIN holding bracket, BUT the instructions stop at the actual towbar. There is no mention at all about how to attach the 7PIN holder. I also bought the relay unit (you need this!) but unless you are an expert, you will not be able to splice this into the loom. With the Volvo, just plugged the trailer module into the appropriate plug in the loom and everything worked immediately. This requires unpicking the correct cable from the loom bundle (cable tied...there must be over 100 wires to choose from) and then diagnose and follow back each wire and splice it in. You need specialist kit for this and I would suggest it is absolutely not an amateur job. SOLUTION. Buy a Ford OEM loom and plug it direct into the Ford electrics. It cost me £170 including home fitting AND coding. Note....no matter what happens, you WILL need to get this coded, and you need a trailer specialist or a dedicated piece of coding hardware to do this. PF JONES. The saving grace with the above was PF JONES. They were brilliant. Phone support was outstanding....like they were standing beside me. I could not have got the towbar fitted (as far as I was able) without them. Even though I could not do the electrics, they talked me through it and what I was looking for...in other words they confirmed that I could not do it, which was value enough and saved me a lot of time! I knew when I was beaten! SUMMARY. Having done this before with a piece of OEM kit (Volvo) I thought I could to the same here. Wrong....it was much more complex. Instructions were rubbish and YouTube (again) saved the day. I am not sure it was worth my while trying to DIY this. Either get a Ford OEM part (if they exist - I did not find one) or get it fitted. That said, now it is done it's a good bit of kit. The guy who did my electrics said these were good 'bars and were the ones they used. But PF Jones were great and much cheaper than Witter (but factor I at least £150 for the dedicated loom and fitting, so maybe not that much cheaper than getting it from Witter and having them fit it).
