A comically dark "fly-on-wall" documentry looks at the lives of two women, trapped and suffocating in their relationship with each other. Little Eadie Bouvier, once a great beauty who graced New York society as a debutante, now looks back with regret and sadness at her life past. Big Eadie, the mother, scoffs at her daughter's reflections and calmly manipulates her whilst contemplating her daughter's life after she has passed away. Living in the squalor of their huge neglected colonial mansion, the flea bitten women nurture their many cats and reminisce about Jackie Kennedy (nee Bouvier), the cousin/niece who married well and made it to the top. Little Eadie has retired from social life and like the prodigal daughter, has come home to care for her aged mother (albeit begrudgingly). Little Eadie's child-like optimism and drastically compelling mood swings play well against her mother's cold, all knowing demeanour. Yet there is a love between them that burts through and embraces the viewer. People like this surely only exist on the pages of a Tennisee Williams play or in a Scott Fitzgerald novellette. The documentary, first made and aired over twelve years ago by the Mayles brothers, has since spawned a hit broadway musical and soon a motion picture. See the real thing before you go near any of them, and see and relish where the inspiration came from.Read full review
