Railway Children DVD (the original movie) There has been at least one other adaptation of the Railway Children, but none will ever beat this original screenplay. It is quite probably the best matinee film for the whole family that I have ever seen. All the ingredients are here: costume, nostalgia, adventure, innocence and a dark secret. Beautifully directed, acted and filmed, the Railway Children is one of Britain's very best. 5/5 Swallows & Amazons (the original movie) The original Swallows and Amazons movie is faithful to the book and doubtless inspired a great many dinghy sailors and mini-adventurers (myself included). Three of the qualities found in the Railway Children, nostalgia, adventure and innocence abound where the world, both real and imagined, is seen almost exclusively through the eyes of the children. Grown ups in general are not to be trusted you see! Most who buy this the original Swallows and Amazons film will have read Arthur Ransome's books years ago, will be familiar with the Lake District today and perhaps want to revisit it in a more romantic era. Whilst the movie IS enchanting it also leaves certain things to be desired: a sense of danger during the robbery, a not very "scary" Captain Flint and too little depth to the children's characters. But the big challenge with any Arthur Ransome adaptation is that the children must act their parts very well in order to draw a (largely grown-up) audience into their alternative and stylised world. 3/5 Swallows & Amazons (2016) - not included in this set Last years big screen version (not exactly a remake as it differs greatly to the book) went part way to achieving a sense of drama by cleverly introducing author Arthur Ransome's own dark side (as Captain Flint). The author in real life was a covert operative for the British security services in Russia and he might even have been a double agent (he did after all marry Trotsky's secretary). Bringing a slight edginess to the story elevates it for younger viewers who are perhaps not familiar with the book, but it also disappoints too many grown-ups like me who are still waiting for the definitive Swallow's and Amazons picture. 3/5Read full review
