Its hard not to like this lens. Quick quiet focus. Sharp images. Useful zoom range. It also works on all my old film and digi Nikon cameras. Yes it is big and heavy. Put it on an F5 and it becomes very heavy, but stable. But it is easy to hand hold for low light work. An optech camera strap takes the pain out of carrying though. Cheers Diz

Brilliant lens. Great value, well made, quick focus, sharp and very useable wide open. Ok its probably not as good as the very impressive 24-70 f2.8 but its a much cheaper way to get a very useful professional quality standard zoom. I mostly use prime lenses because of the quality you gain from them, and i bought this for a couple of jobs where i needed a zoom for versatility, but i'm starting to leave this on the camera more and more. Love it. The only downside is that its a big beast of a lens and feels pretty heavy round your neck so won't suit everyone. Its definitely more suited to serious photographers who are happy to carry it instead of lighter kit zooms for the quality they gain.

I was considering a move from Canon to Nikon and while browsing eBay I spotted this lens. I checked some reviews, found out it was discontinued and looked at the replacement. That costs well over £1000. Made this look good value. I bought it before I even had a Nikon body. So I quickly found a D700..match made in heaven. This lens is so sharp it hurts. Very heavy, but I find that reassuring. Definitely my favourite, I have no concerns of any kind about the kind of images it produces, great colour and contrast. it just delivers. if you can live without the 24-28mm range you'll have to consider this, nicknamed the Beast. If however you need the 24-28 wide end you'll need to look at the current model the 24-70 2.8. If I lost mine I'd certainly get another without hesitation.
