Successor to 76 series. Better screen than the 76s, but majority of the functions are the same. Beware that it's tracklog file format is not compatible with many airsports sites such as GPSDump, and so getting a valid igc file will be almost impossible with this device.

I have used this for several years in a car and when fell walking and found it to be invaluable. There are better car GPS units out there but these don't offer the degree of navigational sophistication that this unit does and certainly will not float if dropped into water. The 78s is marketed as a marine unit and is waterproof, floats and has an NMEA output that will allow it to sail your vessel for you, it will accept Garmin's marine maps. I have European road maps and UK Topo maps installed, the latter backs up, not replaces, OS maps when out in the countryside. It contains a barometer which will read pressure or altitude, and a magnetic compass that will kick in when the speed drops below a certain user set value. This compass can be used to sight and lock in bearings, by adding an estimated or known distance a waypoint can be set. On the road it offers full routing for car, walking, bicycle etc with turn warnings in advance, There are several screen choices and I often opt for one that I have set up to show speed and distance/time to the next turn and destination. Using Garmin's free Basecamp mapping software on a computer allows drag and drop data transfer to and from the unit so waypoints, routes and tracks set up on the computer can be sent to the unit very quickly. Mounting in a vehicle is best done with Garmin's specific holders although I have found that using a piece of non slip mesh and jamming the unit between the dashboard and windscreen works well. I have a cable which allows the unit to be powered from the car lighter socket, this keeps it illuminated. All in all, if you want a GPS unit that will do pretty much anything on land sea and in the air and preferably have some navigational knowledge then buy one of these, you will have fun with it.Read full review
