Not being a Tom Hardy fan, I was prepared to give this series a wide berth, but I am so glad I did not. I was hooked from the first scene and thoroughly enjoyed all eight episodes. Now if there was ever a role that suited an actor perfectly, James Keziah Delaney (the articulate, soft spoken and often brutal savage) is the one for Mr Hardy. Set in early 19th century London, when the Crown was at war with the rebellious Americans seeking independence, the Prince Regent is at odds with the formidable East India Company for the lucrative trade opportunities with China, but this is dependent on gaining ownership of Nootka Sound, a small piece of land on the soon to be drawn up Canadian-US border. However, add to the mix the arrival of James Delaney (presumed dead after 10 years in Africa) who makes a shock appearance at his father's funeral. James subsequently discovers he has inherited the much sought after Nootka Sound and with his own ambition for the trade route, finds himself in the middle of some very powerful forces and a network of American spies. The series is beautifully produced and shows London and all the various characters in a raw, atmospheric and often violent way. The performances by all the cast are great, in particular Jonathan Pryce as the evil Sir Stuart Strange, Jason Watkins as the manipulative royal Private Secretary and Tom Hollander as the ingenious chemist. This is an excellent drama. Don't be put off by those who would analyse the story to death and question plot probabilities. Just enjoy the journey! It is worth it.Read full review

Watched this when it came out and liked it so much bought the DVDS. It historically really interesting. The ruthless power of the East India Company, the ghastly Prince Regent, and the hostility between America and Britain. The acting is really good and the period setting convincing.
