The Yamaha A-S500 is a serious-sounding amp for HiFi or Pro reference listening especially for the price c.a.£200. It has been also a WHAT HIFI 5-star winner as Best stereo Amplifier up to £500 in 2010. I experienced notable improvement, especially in the stereo image and depth quality with Vinyl and CDs. Of course, should be carefully paired with appropriate speakers. Ideally neutral monitor type (in my opinion). If you want an upgrade from entry or mid-range HiFi sound this model will provide the expected step up.

In the past I have used Marantz, two from the pm600 series & one from the 700 series & before that it was mostly Rotel amplifiers. I had a pm6004 for my other turntable in my bedroom & one Sunday had the volume just past 3 0`clock & bam!!! it just stopped working, I went on a few forums & discovered this was common, mostly because of its 45 watts of power or lack thereof, so I wanted something better & opted for this beauty from Yamaha, its heavier than many other intergrated amps & I have heard it called ugly; personally I disagree after all beauty is in the eye & all that. I always opt for amps with loudness control as I don't crank it up all that often but still want some deepness in the bass which is difficult to get at low volume, with amps like a Marantz you get the loudness control but it comes all at once, with the Yamaha you have full gradual control. This amplifier takes everything in its stride, it leans slightly to the warm side which I like & it will drive even demanding speakers easily with its 85 watts of power. I cant say what its like with CDs as I only play them in the car however if you play vinyl & use an MM cartridge then you will struggle to find a better intergrated amplifier for home use.Read full review

You will not regret to have this amp set as your entry level stereo system. For lp records listener, this has phono stage line input, and it does the job fine too. It's a solid built amp with elegant black metal look. Line selector and volume control knobs look very nice. It is simple and classy look of an entry level amp which deliver very fine sound quality.
