I've used these controllers for at least 30 years in their various guises. I prefer the feed-back format. All have been fine for N and OO/HO models (UK and European outline) during intensive exhibition use. Not so good with O gauge locos because some of those motors make nasty noises except with specialist controllers like Helmsman - but at a cost!. I was happy to re-order the HH yet again for a new layout having sold my latest layout with control systems attached.

Provides very fine control of train speed, with something approaching constant speed. Handy size and shape. Against that, the reversing switch is a nuisance, and the hard edges of both controls are uncomfortable to my fingers. So, I put fabric covers over the speed control, and operate the reversing switch with something hard, such as a pencil. I have used this type of controller for nearly 30 years, so the positives must outweigh the negatives!

I bought this product second hand along with some other Guagemaster controllers for comparison. All of them were well made, easy to set up and use, and all gave good control. However this particular controller gave far better low speed control, than others their range, and being designed from the outst as a hand controler there were no connections to be made at the controller itself, just a ready connected single cable which handles both the 16V AC input and the 12V DC output to the track. The output, I think, is pulsed and it is this feature that allows such good low speed control. I model N gauge and there is a warning that the controller is not suitable for these locomotives. I can see how it could cause early three pole motors to stall and then overload, but for later locomotives it works well and brings that touch of realism particularly to goods trains.
