David lynch the Director is an aquired taste. If you like his other Movies such as "Erazorhead","Mulholland drive", "Wild at Heart","Lost Highway" etc, you will definately like this one. Lots of flashbacks, and and very grainy photography for Lynch contribute to the atmosphere of the film about a Jazz Musician's experiences, and his relationship with his wife (Patricia Arquette). I have seen the film three times now and am still trying to figure out what it is all about, but that is the point of Lynch's Movies he wants to make you think and make up your own mind what you think the movie is about. Most Lynch fans will almost certainly have this already , but i would recommend this to those who by chance haven't seen it, but my favourite Lynch film is "Mulholland Drive".If you haven' seen this yet do so, and you will not be disapointed.Read full review
The term post modernism is used so loosely these days, David Lynch however secures the winning title of a post modern piece of film. A mixture of narcotic fuelled sex and violence, drugs and alcohol abuse contrasted with the aesthetics of a 1940/1950`s exterior. The stranger would think nothing of this little town within America but look through the voyeuristic eyes of Jeffrey and you will be sucked into a world not even you could imagine. This film isn`t for the faint hearted but is a genuine masterpiece from the movie genius that is David Lynch.
It's take some time and several viewings to get to grips with this film- the initial horror at the cruelty and casual violence is still there--but I can now see what so many others see when they say it's top of the cult film list!!! If you want to know why then give it a go.! Dennis Hoppers performance is still one of the most chilling I've ever seen- but there still seems to be a balance between Dark and Light-very clever of David Lynch.
If you are a fan of Twin Peaks then you will enjoy this film as they share many similartiies such as Kyle MacLachlan playing the lead role and a soundtrack by Angelo Badalamenti. Lynch uses music like no other filmaker, music is constant throughout Lynch's films and is used beautifully to create mood, atmosphere and to express the characters. The actors in this film are excellent and their characters draw you in leaving you wishing the film lasted longer. I honestly cannot pick one fault with this film, it appeals to Lynch fans and non Lynch fans alike. The film earned Lynch his second Academy Award nomination for Best Director and launched Dennis Hopper's carrer. Released: 1986 Running time: 120 minutes
