I'm not reviewing this particular Marantz cd50se purchased from ebay, but the Marantz cd50se in general. This is a player from around 1989, with many of them still going strong (I've got three, plus various spares) despite their lightweight build. It's probably a good idea - if you're handy with a soldering iron, to replace ALL of the electrolytic capacitors with good quality new ones as they tend to "dry out" with age & usage. I really love this player because of its sound quality & fast track access. It's the kind of player that has the potential to embarrass many newer & more expensive players - because newer so-called improved technology has NOT resulted in better perceived sound quality - unfortunately, & this player proves that point. From the bottom to the top of the audio spectrum this player is amazing with a more potent bass than is common now, coupled with a fabulous midrange & treble. The general presentation of all the Philips based TDA1541A dac/Philips swingarm mech players is of a solid strong sound with great dynamic variation which is open, expressive & transparent. Which is in contrast to the technically superior (on paper) modern machines, which often sound anaemic in comparison, lacking dynamics, expression & colour. With this player, there is no over forward treble which is common in modern cd players, which serves to over project certain instruments giving the false impression of greater superficial detail. Of course, alot depends on the quality of the recording too & the other components connected to the player, ie - the amplifier & speakers. But for the low second hand cost of these, they're terrific value being probably the most common & cheapest second hand player available with this dac/mech combination - I wouldn't touch anything else.Read full review
