I absolutely adored the book, and having it read it several times, it has become one of my all time favourites. So I came to the film with some degree of trepidation, and indeed, on my first viewing of the film I hated it - so much was cut out and the characterisation was not as rich as in the book. However, taking a step back, and being realistic about the daunting task the makers had in transforming the novel into a film, I watched it again - relaxed and enjoyed it far more. Also watching the special features I realised how the makers of the film had struggled with what to put in and leave out and had taken a very thoughtful approach. So all in all, I would say it is a 'good' film of a 'great' novel.
Why does this film always make me cry, and why do I revisit it, with the same expectation? A science fiction exercise, perhaps, but the plot really takes a forwards and backwards view of ancestry, and loss of family. Alma, the daughter, is especially engaging. I always like the marriage scene, the first dance where a small orchestra plays "Love will tear us apart again". Time travel always have to obey the rules, that nothing can change the past. Ridiculous, but moving.
