I got back into vinyl last year so purchased 'vintage' 1990's Amp and Turntable but after giving away all my LPs in the mid 90s my collection was quite small. I did have a huge collection of CD and Cd-R discs so decided to add a Marantz CD player to go with my Amplifier. I checked various models and discovered that the CD5400 plays computer written CD-Rs so I went looking for one and was delighted to find this one at a good price. It sounds amazing, the music is really clear and the vocals stand out. I would recommend this model to anyone who wants the quality but not today's high priced 'inferior' audio equipment - look for the older models - they knew how to build good hi-fi back in the 90s.

This cd player is one of those products that has been overlooked for a longtime by the hifi world. It is one of the very best out there. It will read and player even the most poor cd's, retrieving high quality detail and musicality. If you get the opportunity to get one of there at sub £100 just do it you will not be disappointed.

From a budget CD Player I didn't expect much but here is what surprised me when auditioning... 1. Build quality: albeit a plastic fascia the solid rock mechanism is flawless in operation with good quality gears under the tray. 2. Ergonomics & Functionality: easy and intuitive to use, nice large buttons and little clutter. Some useful features such as headphone jack/volume control; not normally seen on budget Players at this price point. 3. Sound quality: this is where I was most surprised, the reproduction was detailed, warm, and natural; particularly good when listening to instrumental music but equally good when it came to vocals. Dynamics were good and the Player had a good sense of timing, I specially liked the sense of space around every represented instrument (even on more complex tracks). All-in-all I reckon that this Player could stand up against the Pioneer stable platter range and Sony's ES range, to give them a good run for their money! Perhaps the best budget Player I have tested....I can't think of any other second hand buy under £100 that could beat it. If you see one on sale, buy it!!!Read full review

The sound quality is amazing. I did a lot of research and there are many more expensive ones, but the reviews were often more positive for the marantz, very happy I went with this one.

I bought this to replace my cd63KI which had developed a fault. I loved the cd63 to bits but couldn't really afford much so after much interweb research I decided to go for the cd-5400. Initially I was a tad underwhelmed, but after a decent warm up period I am very happy. The sound is very clear with distinct instrument separation even with dense black metal tracks. The sound is perhaps a bit tonally flat, but a tweak of my amp settings easily resolved this, and dynamically all is well. Build quality is super and for the price I paid I am more than satisfied!
