What did Victorian-era parents give their 12-21 year old daughters as Christmas (or Birthday) presents before the days of information technology, Smart Phones, Internet and other electronic devices and before television, telephones, cinema (movies), record players or radio came into the family home? (The only keyboard in the home was a piano or a typewriter!) They gave books! Big books, thick books, heavy books, books loaded with information on cooking, handicrafts, knitting, sewing, how to behave in public and other social etiquette skills. How they should behave in front of family, relatives, friends and males. How to talk to people and the skills needed to live (survive) in the latter quarter of the 19th. Century. These books were the 'internet' of the day (1880 to 1956) and were full of (serial) stories for girls and young ladies, as well as being full of helpful hints to running (managing) a home and how to be a good wife, how to talk to the servants, how to accept your visitors to your home, how to 'stretch' the household budget and how to be thrifty and spend wisely. (These tomes cover everything subject possible except for one.) I enjoy the trip back all the way to a time when the only way you heard music was to hear it 'live'. Either you played it or you heard someone else preform it, be it at home or in a Music Hall. Were girls (young ladies) given more freedom to persue careers in the 1890's than the 1990's? Are things better now for women in the 21st. Century than they were in the 19th. Century? Open any volume of this big book on any page and ponder the fashions of the day, the duties required by each member of the family, the problems faced each day and compare it with the same situation today. I like going back in time with these books, but I am glad I can return to the present time. A most enjoyable book and one to show the grand-children when they complain about how bad things are today. The books are a great read and are great value for money if you do look around. You will need a sturdy book-case if you plan to house many volumes.Read full review

What a compelling read, the true story of a white man truly wanting to make a difference in a truly hostile time and place. He wrote it from the heart, he genuinely cared for the suffering of others and put his life on the line doing it. Well done John.

This is a very typical book by the author with the prerequisite mysterious alpha male and the nasty other woman competing with the sweet and innocent but not stupid heroine.

I found this book entertaining although E Laurie Long is a bit weak on women characters. It would probably appeal to older (pensioner?) readers.

For me, it was quite hard to get into the way of 19th century prose, but I solved that by dipping into it when I felt like it. This volume is packed with interesting facts and anecdotes.
