I used to be a Squier snob. I bought a mini-strat for my daughter. It had a bendy neck but was okay for a kid's guitar. I then stuck my nose up in the air for fifteen years. I've been looking for a fretless for around a year now. We do a couple of African numbers and for this a fretless sounds best. I had just about settled on the Ibanez semi-hollow piezo model, but then I saw the Squier. Not only was it for half the price, but it is an absolutely FANTASTIC bass. It has an extremely durable synthetic fingerboard, which is a plus because even with flatwounds rosewood can develop ruts. I'm running Roto flat 45s and it sounds great - that sexy, satiny fretless hum is wonderful. The pups and pots are great as well. Nice range of tones and smooth pots with just the right amount of resistance. Plus the neck is great and perfectly set, it is well-balanced, and a joy to play. Note that the fret lines are raised by perhaps a half a millimeter, but this can't be felt and it doesn't affect any thing. I am used to fretted basses, my first being an original 63 P (before old basses became "vintage"), with my collection including a Kramer headless, a Rick 4001, and an Ibanez 5 string. Having the lines makes a world of difference. It is easy to hit the notes and it also makes you less lazy. Doing quick and accurate runs is a breeze but I am still working on accurate chords (I've been lazy for years. This forces me to use the correct finger and hand positions, which I should have been using from the start.) There are only two things I don't like: The Squier logo and the Jaco looks. I installed a proper Jazz pick guard (which required a slight shift in the position of the control plate) and now it's perfect. I cannot believe that this bass is available at this price. There is no other fretless on the market that offers such tremendous bang for the buck. If I want a Jaco bass I can pay $2K for a Fender, or 1/7 the price for a Squire. My nose is no longer in the clouds. I don't care about the decal. This is an amazing bass.Read full review
