This comes as the kit lens with with some of Canons APS-C DSLR cameras. It has a versatile range of focal lengths, and the images it produces are sharp. It's only downfall is that it doesn't perform too well in low light, with a maximum aperture of only f3.5. It's an excellent low cost lens, so no wonder Canon chooses to ship some of their cameras with it.

I think i these kit lenses had a longer lifespan i'd give it 4/5, but they are so cheap, light and flimsy, they will never really last. It's a pity that Canon just don't give them a little more quality; it's really a gestural thrown in cursory lens to get you taking a few shots. It's the focus that breaks after a while, and the zoom will too. They are sharp enough (for some), but if you are serious about photography then you must avoid this lens at all costs, save up and buy an L lens or at least a fixed prime. Even the 50mm f/1.8. Simple!
