Bought to be able to use at a special needs school because there is no built camera. Battery life - not enough for one night shift. Provides a modicum of entertainment to wile away the long nights. Possibly the only tablet on the market care workers can use.

I originally had a 'kindle'(e-reader only)and was looking for a replacement. Put off that the kindle's battery had expired, I searched elsewhere. I had a limited budget, but in terms of value for money the nook (£60 on ebay)is excellent. You get so much for your money. I read reviews about the clarity and richness/high pixel ratio of the screen and this is true. Stunning presentation. The extra memory card that can be inserted(bought in addition)leaves lots of storage space (32GB) for music, books, photos, film and programme downloads, although the nook already has a healthy 16GB of storage anyway. I love its versatility; excellent as an e-reader (originally designed for this). It has many 'kindle' like features and you can stream kindle titles through Kindle's android app on to the nook. So I have access to all the titles I originally purchased on my kindle. I also have access to the nook catalogue too. But the nook is also good for downloading BBCi player programmes and films (via 'Ultraviolate' for example)and watching later on the train. I have been rediscovering old favourite albums through streaming any music I want to hear through 'Spotify' on this device. This is free amazingly, you just have to put up with a brief advert every 5 or 6 tracks; a small price to pay for being able to hear pretty much any track off any album you want to listen to. The blue tooth capability on the nook means that I can stream music through it to a blue tooth enabled speaker system, and in effect use the nook as a remote. The nook's built in speakers are pretty good- I've propped the nook up on a bathroom shelf and enjoyed listening to music from it while having a bath. The nook comes with access to apps- various games (I enjoy the odd game of 'hangman' at the moment), weather and sport apps . One tip. I originally thought I must have been sent an inferior device because the settings info said my software version was 2.2.0. Most Android apps today cannot be downloaded unless you have capacity of 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich' and above. It works out the 2.2.0 figure is not referring to Android spec and this device does download apps that require 4.0-4.0.2 'Ice Cream'. Apparently it is possible to upgrade its Android capability to 4.4 'kitkat' through utilising the memory card and paying an internet firm. There is access to the internet through Google. I particularly like how the nook has map location facility (via Google), so it shows a map of where you are and then will give you written and visual directions of where you want to go, how long the journey is, and whether it's by car, train or even cycling/walking. The nook has a solid build and looks durable. The size of the device encourages mobility- it even fits into the breast pocket of my jacket. Sound quality through a pair of bud shaped Sennheiser headphones (purchased from Currys for £10)is crystal clear. The size is also fine for watching films/programmes, especially on journeys- and while most people are peering from a distance at a service station screen with no sound, I have no problem enjoying the audio and visual delights coming from my nook while drinking a latte. So many benefits- really I should give it 5 stars. But there is a niggle. I cannot access certain apps because they are tied to the American market. Barnes & Noble email me a catalogue of items all in dollars and wont accept my UK payment. However, there is a limited UK shop and Google has android apps for UK usage.Read full review
Have read many reviews, and considering my needs ~ I wanted a colour reader for books and magazines, I did not want a camera and I did not want all the "social apps". This came out a distinct winner and at the price paid a bargain. My only complaint is that the 2 guides "Easy Start" and "Comprehensive" are both pretty useless and lack detail. I have purchased both books and magazines from the Google apps, but my music download is lost in hyper-space, I'm sure I will find it but the guides are no help at all. In addition books from "Dummies for ..." and other suppliers / authors are so out of date and lack the information on this level NOOK. To finish on a +'ive the screen quality is superb, having view photographs and video I am well impressed. I have no doubt the HD+ at 9" is better for image viewing but the 7" is ideal for my prime use of books and magazines, especially as I do not have to cart a load of books and magazines with me when I travel abroad.Read full review
