I paid extra to have the HDD (hard drive) swapped for a Solid Sate and the RAM upgraded to 8Gb and so far so good. The SSD means that the whole machine runs silently, with just the odd interruption from the fan for graphics cooling. No whirling HDD or continuous fan to keep it cool. This also means less dust inside! Having moved from a 13.1" Dell Vostro the 14" Lenovo screen is a nice size upgrade and perfect if you don't want a 'huge' 15.6, much more sociable to travel with! I do however miss my Dell backlit keyboard. This is available as another 'upgrade', which I will be doing. The keys are nice and pronounced, not flush, which makes typing quite assured. The textured mouse pad is something foreign to me and is taking a while to get used to the sensation, but the addition of the mouse 'nipple' is great if you need to move the pointer about really fast. Not sure what the graphics is like for gaming, but video playback is definitely smoother and far sharper than the Vostro 3300. There is NO standard size HDMI output, only a mini one and VGA. If you want to use HDMI you will need to buy an adapter or a Mini to Standard cable (loads on fleabay). On the underside there's a docking port, presumably for office users. There's a fingerprint reader for security too. The machine does not feel cheap or flimsy and seems to be well constructed. On the whole, once I have fitted the backlit keyboard I will be very happy with my reasonably priced laptop. The Windows Performance Experience rates my Vostro at 4.8 (results in order: 6.9, 7.0, 4.8, 5.8, 5.9). The Thinkpad rates at 5.9 (7.1, 7.5, 5.9, 6.5, 7.9), so it significantly outperforms the Vostro, with the new SSD achieving the max score possible for a hard drive.Read full review
