we have been using these radios now for about 8 or 9 years for advanced training runs, to give instructions and commentary rides. they work great up to around a mile or two depending on the type of area your in. there are newer models to the 3101, but they still work very well and we will continue to buy them for as long as we can get hold of them.
Kenwood TK-3101s are good, rugged, basic walkie-talkies. 15 channels gives you enough range to ensure clear communications over ranges up to 1 mile outdoors or 250m indoors. The TK-3101 is not serviceable: aerials cannot be easily replaced without technical knowledge, but nevertheless they are rugged and stand up to hard knocks. But be careful of the aerials: do not hold or swing the radio by the aerial.
The Kenwood TK-3101 came out in June 2004, and was the first PMR446 radio that met the high military standards. I bought this product in mid 2011 because I had the Kenwood TK-3201 and TK-3301 (The later & latest versions) and had heard very good things about it. I was not disappointed when I first used it, for various reasons: 1) The aesthetics in relation to the Kenwood TK-3101 are very stylish, however professional at the same time. You don't get this with normal PMR446 radios, not even the Kenwood TK-3201 & TK-3301! 2) The radio has fifteen channels, all on the PMR446mHz frequency, and with two watts of power output, signals transmitted with one of these radios can be received up to a mile away with other PMR446 radios. 3) This radio is very sturdy and reliable, keeping in mind they were no longer in the shops from June 2006 onwards, these radios are still going after five years, other walkie talkies don't last that long. However, there are a couple of disadvantages of the Kenwood TK-3101. They are stated below: 1) Unlike every other PMR446 radio that I know of, (and I know a lot of them!), the TK-3101 has 2 watts of power output, and the legal limit for PMR446 radios is 0.5 watts, therefore technically you are breaking the law if using the Kenwood TK-3101 without a licence from Ofcom. 2) The Kenwood TK-3101 is the heaviest PMR446 radio made by Kenwood, weighing between 330g-340g depending on which battery is installed. Not to mention the size including the 15.4cm(6.2inches) antenna! 3) As the TK-3101 is no longer manufactured, most of the accessories, (inc. the chargers and batteries) are also no longer manufactured, this means if they are brand new they must not be genuine. To conclude, the Kenwood TK-3101 is one of the best PMR446 radios on eBay, a must-have for all walkie-talkie fans! I hope this review has been helpful. Thanks for reading.Read full review
