Over the years I have used a crank machine, a Cuisinart electric machine and a cheap-o discount store machine to make (or try to make) homemade ice cream. However, none of them comes close to the same universe as this White Mountain Electric Ice Cream Maker! First time out of the box, and it made perfect vanilla ice cream for our Fourth of July family party. Just followed the directions. Simple. Easy. 25 minutes to make, and then we froze it in our freezer for four hours. Oh my! It scooped just like ice cream from the store...and tasted just like I remember from my childhood. Some reviews cite loud motor noise, but the power/quality of the motor is more important to me than the noise. (I've had too many previous ice cream maker motors die.) After more than 50 years of trying different ice cream freezers I have to say the White Mountain is still the best there is. If you're thinking of trying less expensive alternatives, don't waste your time and money. You'll only be disappointed and end up with a White Mountain, or give up on home made ice cream, which would really be a shame. Clean up is not too easy but is critical to many years of continued use. It is no more difficult than any other freezer. The instructions recommend filling the canister no more than half way. I'm not sure why, except that the more full the canister the longer it takes the mixture to freeze. If half full, the ice cream will set up very nicely in about 20 - 25 minutes. If 3/4 full it takes 30 - 35 minutes. Be sure to keep adding rock salt as you add ice. Enjoy, and be sure to share.Read full review
