Bamford & Martin Limited completed the first Aston Martin in 1914 and raced it and other cars extensively in the early 1920s. The Bertelli and Sutherland periods, 1926-1947, brought new models and some international success. The 1950s saw several models and a diverse racing programme before the company finally entered Formula 1 in 1959 - proving unsuccessful against rear-engined competition. GT racing brought better success, but eventually the works cars proved no match for their Ferrari rivals. Aston Martin (and the associated Tickford company) later supplied engines for the Surtees Lola coupes, the Nimrod and other Group C cars before launching its own short-lived Group C programme in 1989. Appendices detailing key people, race performances from 1922, car specifications, and Aston Martin and Lagonda V12 competition car histories.
