Lens with excellent optical quality, which is what you would expect for the high price paid. The weight of the lens is quite heavy , but not as heavy as the 600mill and it's possible to handhold with some shots in short periods, but far better on a good sturdy tripod for better control. The case the lens came in is quite large and would be used for storage at home rather than on vacation, would like to have seen something more practical which could allow you to carry it when it's not attached to the camera when out walking. Would recommend this if you are a cannon owner but it comes at a price !
This is the second Canon 500 f4 IS lens I've had. The first fell off the tripod into the sea and refused to work any more. It is the sharpest lens I've used [and Ive tried them all 300 f4, 400 f4 and 600 f4.5]. It focuses fast, it is robust and produces outstanding photographs. Any dwonside - yes it doesn't float!
A great lens. Very sharp and light weight. Definately recommeded. The 500mm compared to the 600mm is a much better lens.
