  • From exaggeration to tender feeling.

Bus Stop is an early film featuring Marilyn Monroe. A cowboy come to compete in the rodeo, who has never kissed a girl before, falls for a bar singer who longs to star in Hollywood. She doesn’t fancy marrying a hick from a remote ranch in Montana. He has no finesse in his demands to make her love him. It starts as an exaggerated comedy but ends poignantly and made me cry- again. If you know some of Marilyn’s life story the parallels will strike you.

  • Monroe as an actress.

This 1956 film by Joshua Logan is the most dramatic Monroe did. Unlike her previous films, this is neither a comedy or musical (Monroe does just two numbers) thus highlighting her acting abilities - she was even nominated for a Golden Globe at the time. Naive rodeo cowboy Beauregard 'Bo' Decker (Don Murray) falls in love with Cherie (Marilyn Monroe) after watching her sing at a cafe/bar. She wants, and tries to, run away to Hollywood but Bo forces her to board a bus for his home in Montana. When the bus stops at a diner in the middle of nowhere, the passengers learn they are stranded due to bad weather and find out about Bo's "kidnapping" of Cherie, but he's determined to take her home regardless. Filmed in bright technicolour, this film isn't the usual Monroe fare - especially given ...

  • Well worth it!

Bought this after seeing the stage play recently. Monroe is excellent. If you haven't seen this I think it's essential viewing. In comparison to the stage play it's fascinating to see how some things are added, immpossible on stage, and some things in the play are changed for the film.
