As a new driver - in the UK - I wanted to wander a bit with my car. I have had a really bad experience, as it was very difficult to return back home in a reasonable time... I was lost! Afterwards I decided to buy a sat-nav device. I compared several brands online and I found out that Garmin nuvi 1340 is worth to try. In fact that decision was based on price as well as options besides reading tens of reviews. I was interested in certain functions, such as how accurate and reliable the navigation will be and if the device reads the maximum speed. Well, Garmin 1340 is really accurate in terms of navigation, calculates very fast, and recalculates in no time (if you didn't follow directions). It tells street names and also tells which lane one should stay on. For example if there is a confusing slip road on left the device realises it so it tells you 'stay on the right' several times before you reach the slip road. The 'problems' I experienced so far with this navigator is that some speed limits in certain roads are outdated so it is advisable to read the signs as well. While it reads your current speed as well, the device doesn't give the exact speed. For example, if your speed is 29 the device thinks that it is 31. If the speed limit 30 and there is a speed camera approaching, the device will peep thinking that you are exceeding the speed limit and you might be caught which can be annoying. These are the very few shortcomings I found with Garmin 1340. However, the good points far exceed the bad ones. I believe this navigator is relatively very reliable. I would comfortably recommend Garmin nuvi 1340.Read full review
It is excellent in its mainstream feature and navigation. My husband has an older model Garmin 255W which I have become accustomed to their user interface and performance, so I can't compare to other makes. The biggest disappointment for both units is that you got to be patient the first time to use it. You need to turn it on outside and wait for a while (which sometimes may takes more than a few minutes) for it to initialize and acquire the satellite signal. I have this unit for 2 months now and overall I am very happy with it.
Used Tom Tom before & miss certain features such as miles to destination & choose alternative route feature on the main display however garmin is quicker at connecting, easy to use & is by & large reliable when it comes to maps in my local area...when setting off the 'drive to highlighted route' response does drive me a little mad, especially when lost!
This sat nav is so easy to use, and the fact I can save addresses to favourites is brilliant and saves time. Great screen display and it's pretty light and not bulky.
