This product is ideal when using paints that aren't water based. It allows you to use a brush more than once. Excellent item.

Big mistake buying this item! Bought it to use as a 'thinner' rather than a cleaner and item has warning that it should not be used as a thinner!! Product therefore ridiculously overpriced - actually worked out more expensive than the hammerite paint itself. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT DON- in terms of using it to cleanse brushes just take the easy way out and throw away the used paintbrush! Bought five quality Harris paintbrushes recently for £12 and Hammerite thinners was £19 - says it all and more. Shame on Hammerite.

I last bought some of this 12 years ago. Times have changed since then and the present formula no doubt has to comply with EU regulations on solvents that can be made available for sale to the general public. The original solvent contained Toluene which was a very good cleaner for all things metal as well as the paint brushes used to apply Hammerite. It also sent you on a journey over the rooftops if you inhaled too much. The present stuff is OK as a degreaser, not wonderful at cleaning soiled brushes and smells vile. As there is niothing else available to the general public which will clean Hammertite off brushes as effectively I suppose that it did its job.

I bought a 250ml tin of Hammerite thinners and brush cleaner years ago and it was a very effective solvent, I ran out during lockdown and purchased 1 litre online. It doesn’t smell the same and the formula may have changed because it isn’t as effective in cleaning brushes as the tin I bought previously. I am disappointed but there’s are no alternative products that I can find that cleans brushes used for Hammerite paint.

Its the only material that will thin Hammerite, therefore essential. If you wish to spray for example I generally do not clean brushes but use cheap ones and throw them away, but if you wish to swap colours for example Hammerite thinners is the only thing you can clean the brush with, although attempting cleaning can result in the bristles falling out/
