I have tested this on 35mm film SLRs (Nikon F100, F801s and FE), a DX format DSLR (Nikon D300) and a compact system camera (CSC Sony NEX-3). I have compared it with lenses such as the manual focus AIS version of the Nikon 35mm f2 (my benchmark lens for image quality), the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8G ED VR (the Mk1 version) and the Nikon 17-55mm f2.8G DX. In short it is up against some tough opposition. Of the lenses mentioned the weakest was the 17-55mm f2.8 and that would be stretching things because the few weaknesses were relative only to the other two full pro spec Nikon lenses. I bought this because I wanted to use only full frame lenses because I still shoot 35mm film and I couldn't afford the Nikon 24-70 f2.8. How many of us can I wonder? I bought it on the strength of its reviews and I am generally pleased with it. The only weakness that disappoints me in any way is the play in the barrel when it is fully extended and the huge 82mm filter screw. There is also some barrel creep. The hood isn't that great either but none of these things make me dislike it. The AF motor is old and noisy but also fast enough and accurate. It is not a G type lens, it has it's own aperture ring so I can still use it on my older 35mm SLRs such as my Nikon F801s and even my Nikon FE. It is heavy, well built and, when I got used to it, I learned to like the manual focus mechanism. It is positive and nicely damped. When I test for sharpness it is not very scientific. I don't bench test them and check the data read offs to the nth degree. I just want to know if it is useable, particularly at it's reported weak points. In this lens' case that would be wide open at 70mm. It doesn't touch any of the Nikons, not even the 17-55mm f2.8 at 24mm (that lens' reported weak spot). The edges are not nearly as well defined and there isn't as much detail but you know what? It is still very sharp and perfectly useable. And don't forget that at 70mm and f2.8 the depth of field is going to be very small so if you fluff the focus you might not even know it. You might just note it down as a bit soft. It is also perfectly useable in the borders and extreme edges. Stopping down by just 1/3rd will show an improvement and this just gets better and better all the way to diffraction at about f11. By f5.6 though this lens is as sharp as it gets and delivers superb colour and contrast to boot. In fact by this point at any focal length, the image quality is professional, no doubt about it. In fact it rivals the Nikon professional lens' that I have already mentioned, including the prime. In truth most lenses behave slightly differently with film than they do with digital and 35mm (Full frame or FX in Nikon speak) behaves slightly differently to DX/APS-C but suffice to say that in my opinion, this lens delivers superb results in either format and either medium. So if you consider one it it because you can't afford the Nikon or Canon equivalent, there is a huge difference in price but there isn't a huge difference in performance, lots of professional and semi professional photographers use these lenses and with good reason. You get a lot for your money. I cannot vouch for the newer HSM version of this lens, reportedly this older version is optically thRead full review
The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG lens is a well-built, well-spec’d lens with a value price. The Autofocus is loud but reasonably fast – and is consistently accurate on stationary subjects. AI Servo performance on active subjects proved to be very good as well. The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Lens is very soft wide open – especially in the upper half of the focal length range.… This lens performs best at 24mm where the results are very decent. CA (Chromatic Aberrations) are very well controlled, flare is not but a good filter solve all of them. … Vignetting results are normal for lenses with specs similar to the 24-70 when shooting wide open.2f-stops on pretty nice. So ther you go a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Lens is a very well built lens for a reasonable price. Primarily due to mediocre image quality,I intend to include this lens in my Nikon General Purpose Lens Recommendations. If you consider this an f/2.8 lens, you "might" be happy with what you get for the price !!!Read full review

What's to say? If you're considering one then you know why you want it; you've probably already read the professionals' reviews, seen their scores and ratings and compared Sigma's price to Nikon's equivalent. So what do you expect me to add? The big glass makes it a chunky monkey, which can be a chore when lugging a bagful of lenses around but is also reassuringly firm and stable in use and Sigma's expertise in optics makes it a pleasure to view the results of your handiwork. Go on; buy it. You know you want to.
Very happy with lens wanted something very good and sharp wide angle and in budget so I found this. Good quality. Could do with OS!! but it's good for what I need it.
