I recently bought my Epson 4870 on ebay from a seller who could not have been more helpful. I bought it for the sole purpose of scanning a set of glass negatives, to turn them into photographs for a book that I am writing, I must say the the Epson did a superb job, these negatives are 4"x3" , the scanner is supposed to handle 5"x4", but I don't have any that size to test it to it's limit. It also scans photo's very well, and I am very happy with the results that I am getting.
Top of the range Epson flatbed when it was introduced in 2004. Flatbed scanning technology hasn't moved on much since then so you're really not missing much with an older model. I only use mine for film scanning, should be much, much, cheaper than an Epson V700 for nearly as good results, noticeably better my V500. On the downside you have to wait 30 seconds for the bulb to warm up, the newer scanners have LED lamps that are instant. Good buy & excellent results if you don't want to shell out for a V700 and don't mind waiting for it occasionally.
