I'm in the process of converting old video tapes to digital format mp4 or DVD. I needed a camera that supported the 8mm formats of the time, Video8, Hi8 & Digital8. I also wanted the camera to act as a pass-through device for capturing VHS too, and make use of the FireWire connection. The current range USB Video Capture Devices seem to drop frames all over, leaving audio badly out of sync and an unwanted task of re-syncing, not to mention the washed out picture quality. I came across a Sony DCR-TRV110E in my case an immaculate example that looked brand new despite being 22 years old. I went to the Sony website and read the manual first to see if it met my needs and was pleased to see it did. The camera as well as having FireWire connections also had RCA connections to enable me to pass-through a VHS player. The pass-through process couldn't be easier with the VHS player connected to the camera & the camera via FireWire connected to the computer. I am extremely happy with the capture results and the picture quality is so much better than lo-cost USB devices. The capture is much steadier and the skies are now looking blue, rather than blown out to white. The audio is not out of sync and so far to date I've only seen one dropped frame. As using it as camera, I have only done a few test videos, the quality of the videos are great and there are plenty of features including NightShot. The auto focus keeps good track of the subject, despite foreground objects coming into view. The only thing I would recommend is to get an external mic. If the scene is fairly quiet you will pick up the motor noise due to it being a tape. You can get video mics with isolated mounts that could mount directly onto the cameras hot-shoe, thus eliminating unwanted noise. But overall a great little camera.Read full review
