I saw Supercar on TV when I was 6. Many a time I have thought back and wished to see it again. Now, 50 years later, I have – thanks to my discovery of this fantastic DVD set. Obviously, the memories of a programme watched by a 6 year old 50 years ago were few – but I knew that it had hugely impressed me. Would I be terribly disappointed on seeing it again? Would it be primitive, clumsy, simplistic, patronising or even boring? Watching the first few programmes again, I was amazed by the sophisticated dialogue, the vocabulary, the relaxed, laid-back style, the wonderfully un-melodramatic and slow-paced presentation, the humour and the huge charm that it exudes. Yes, they use props of Supercar for long distance shots that don't look similar to the Supercar used for the close-ups, and yes, the Mike Mercury figure looks completely different too – and they didn't go to the trouble of taking new long distance shots when there were more passengers aboard. Yes, when the doors open for Supercar to rise from its base during the day, the same cloud is always there. Yes, you can see the strings and the facial expression is fixed (but very cleverly fitting for almost any emotion). On "low definition" 425 lines PAL black and white TVs of the sixties, it was great to watch. This digitally re-mastered DVD shows all the (then hidden) details – and, for me, that only adds to its charm. Younger viewers may find the simplicity and lack of "wham! crash! pow!" too subdued – or, as I had feared it might be, boring. They may also reject black and white as unacceptable. But anyone who has the patience/attention span to watch a couple of episodes should find themselves hooked on the easy delivery and delightful humour of the very strong characters. To me, at least, this DVD collection is absolutely wonderful. Far better than I could possibly have hoped it would be from my faint memories of it. I shall treasure it. Short version of my critique: It's a gem! :)Read full review
