I had a toss up with this camera and the also very good Panasomic Lunix LX3 Or LX5 while I know there are Pro's and Con's for both the Canon and the Lunix LX Range I feel you must try and work out that part yourself. Why the Canon, Well for my after owning the Camon Icos for many years with many happy returns I wanted to update my Camrea and while I was not really looking for a Large Digtal SLR camrea I was sure I wanted a unit that can offer some Manual modes and allow the user to set there own F. Stop and Sutter Speed but at the same time being Pocket size so I can just slip it into my pocket. So This unit is made well using mainly a Metal Body, very clear large screen a handy Ring at the front alowing easy changing of options in auto this mainly changes the Distance. The Contrals are super the Dial is a Wizz allowing quick options Dail on the Top changes Modes this are Manual and auto along with a Move mode in HD Format. I can only find two things I don't like or for a more simple word I think could of been better, That was the flash unit pops up from the unit and while you get used to holding the camrea its will be in the way, It taken about three weeks to get used it holding it to alow the Flash Pop up. The only other very small thing I am still not sure about I take close up's of my plants in the Greenhouse and This unit as Macro mode but for me not quite as small as I would of liked but it does so many modes I am just expecting everything. I feel this unit is a very nice Compact unit that can take on the Lumix and while I feel owners of the Canan S90 made not need to update. Great unitRead full review
I started taking pictures in the late 1960s using a Kodak Instamatic. I started serious photography with SLRs in the early 1980s with Nikons and have had Nikon SLRs and DSLRs ever since. I've had many compacts over the years, most of them have been Canons. This one follows a long pedigree of well thought out, well made and value for money compact cameras. This is effectively a lightweight version of the G11, light, small and packed with features. Only Panasonic are equal to the task in my opinion, but where they fall flat is Canon's strength. I like a 'do it all camera' with a quality processor. Canon make a waterproof housing for both the S90, S95 and the S100, as they have for generations of their compacts. The housings are rated to 40m and allow access to the S95's full range of controls, making this a versatile and handy camera for holidays and the underwater adventurer. My one criticism is the lack of a grip for large fingers, but there are after market items that can cover this. The wideangle 28-105 zoom lens is excellent, as is the film speed at full resolution 80-3200, the bright view finder screen, and all the features that tickle the fancy of the photographer who perhaps is considering a leap to DSLR territory. All in all a superb compact.Read full review
i wanted a camera that gave me the option of full manual control that would fit into a pocket and would be available to take what ever type of picture where and when i wanted. having done extensive research plus being an avid canon fan and finding that this pocket camera has the capabilities and features that the canon G12 has it was a no brainer. the pictures that i have so far taken have proved my choice has be vindicated. it has excellent build quality and easy to use menus.
My other cameras are a G10 and 450D and consequently my review is based upon the experience of them as a bench mark. In most respects the S95 is a 'vest pocket' version of a G series camera, lacking only in its reach and hotshoe. The S95 is fiddly to hold and the 'Lensmate Grip' aids handling. However its small size is a great boon as it enables you to access a quality camera at all times. At ISO 80-200 there is little to choose between the 3 cameras, but at higher sensitivities the S95 is better than the G10 by a significant margin. It is noisier than the 450D. However shooting in RAW and tweaking in Photoshop can make images exposed at up to 1600 pleasant and usable. JPEGs are 'punchy'with plenty of detail. I had tried an IXUS115 but the pictures never had the same depth to them. If you want a camera that can handle numerous situations allowing you to control the outcome and yet never weigh you down the S95 is a good choice.Read full review
It's a good little camera this. Within the price range it's hard to find anything better. You can go fo the Olympus XZ-1, but keep in mind that it's not that pocketable and the noise performance ain't great at all. Anyway S95 is still the better choice as it gives very very nice image quality, it's fast and easy to operate. I would not recommend shooting over 800 iso as you will loose details in the pictures. Setting manual controls also is well made as you can make a shortcut and control iso, aperture & shutter speed or whatever you like. Screen is bright and nice. Flash performance is excellent for a camera of this size. Overall excellent stuff from Canon. You should not care that it's 2010 model.
