One of the best TV series ever made: the actors, a lot of them at the beginning of their careers, are superb. As an observation of history in the making, this takes first prizel
This is quite simply how all television ought to be if one lived in an ideal world. Brilliantly observed characters, accurate historical overview, incisive scripting, wonderful performances and a gripping, heartfelt narrative. This is wonderfully realised stuff, Daniel Craig is absolutely amazing as Geordie Peacock and Christopher Eccleston gives a bravura performance. Also notable is Peter Vaughn, a great character actor. The big human themes this drama tackles with much aplomb, particularly the brokenness of that formative human male experience; fathers and sons. All set against 30 years of British history, the northern scenario, corruption, love and loss, the faults and virtues of life from teenage choices to middle aged repercussion. Stunning and brilliant! A modest, modern masterpiece. What more can be asked of television?Read full review
This is a fantastic tale of four friends through there adult lives. It spans decades of adventures, trials and tribulations. From So Ho London to working Class Newcastle. I cannot emphasise enough if you haven't seen this story you won't be dissapointed-plus it has the gorgeous Daniel Craig in an early role.
Saw this when it first aired on BBC and have been trying to find it ever since. Outstanding BBC drama based loosely around politics but more around the political system and corruption by people in positions of power and trust. Kick-started the careers of 4 of our best UK talents - Christopher Eccleston/Daniel Craig/Mark Strong and Gine McKee. The best musical score of a drama series ever, with some songs fitting in so perfectly you would swear they had been written for the scenes. A strong script meshed with excellent performances all round make this the best of the best.
TV dramas are just not made like this anymore. The production values, the story and the towering talents of the actors make this a watershed in TV drama. The bonus of course is that this is the breakthrough role for Daniel Craig who went on to become one of the UK's finest actors. This is so hard to find these days, so I was very pleased to get this copy. If you find a copy, buy it. You won't regret if for no other reason than it will remind you of how good British TV used to be before cheap reality garbage and idiot game shows!
