The thing I love about this machine is that I bought it second hand, it's over 25 years old and it still works much better than the ones we had at college. I reckon analogue beats digital hands down simply because they are easier to fix when something goes wrong. If you want to learn how to sew, I wouldn't bother buying a beginners sewing machine, I would just go straight out and find an old one like this on the cheap. I paid £200 for this and I'm pretty sure it's going to last me a long time as long as I keep having it serviced regularly, as opposed to spending between £70-£150 on a mainly plastic beginners, which when you first need to have it serviced (in the first few months) you'll think, what is the point? This machine is high quality. It can deal with very thick, to delicate fabrics. When you use it you think, this was definitely ahead of it's time. Bernina is my favourite make of sewing machines, the Swiss just get everything right. There is a reason people are still buying these old machines because they are reliable and easy to use. No fancy LED screens, it has everything you need. Think about all the amazing pieces of clothing we all buy from thrift stores now, much more high quality than what you see on the general market nowadays. All created using these brilliant machines.Read full review

I bought this 1971 Bernina 830 on ebay because it had a reputation for excellence - for 11 years it was the top of the range machine produced by Bernina. I am totally delighted to find that it is every bit as good as I hoped. It is a solid heavy duty machine that copes equally well with light-weight and heavy fabric. It is pleasant to use and the quality of the straight and decorative stitches is excellent. I am a keen quilter and use my machine for patchwork, quilting and dressmaking. Anyone wanting a reliable and versatile sewing machine might do well to consider a second-hand Bernina, rather than a light-weight modern plastic machine.

I had a similar machine that did good service for 47 years! This is a replacement which has had less use than mine and I hope to use it for another... 30year?...that should see me out!
