The Yamaha S2700 is billed as a DVD player, but in reality it is a multi-function player dealing with DVD which it can upscale to 1080p, SA-CD Audio discs and DVD-Audio discs, as well as standard CD discs. It plays them all with equal aplomb. In reality it is likely to play any format disc you care to throw at it, including recordable discs, with the sole exception of RAM discs. Virtually all DVD players can replay CD audio discs, but almost to a man, the audio quality usually falls short of all but the very cheapest of CD players, and so are of no interest to audio aficionados. The S2700 has been equipped with bespoke electronics specifically to deal with audio replay, particularly with the far superior quality that is available via SA-CD and DVD-Audio. And this was the primary reason for buying. As a DVD player quality is first class, but as my 36" CRT TV can't accept HDMI signals I am unable to comment on its performance when upscaling DVD's. However, it is used primarily as a music player for SA-CD discs, and some DVD-Audio, and in this respect audio performance is absolutely stunning. I was awestruck by the quantum leap of SA-CD over CD, even when playing CD on a top end CD player, as dynamics and frequency response are significantly enhanced and the true 24bit 96k (or 192k) digital stream signal (CD is, and forever likely to be, restricted to 16bit and 44.1k) allows for a far greater realism and naturalness to the sound. Were it not for the fact that it also does an excellent job at replaying the inferior CD digital signal such that even my CD's sound better, this unit could have consigned my CD collection to the waste bin. So good is it at music replay. There is no doubt that with the upsurge in inexpensive Blu-ray players, which upscale DVD as well, there is less of a market for hi-end DVD upscaling multifunction players such as this anymore, but this is to miss the point. SA-CD players are thin on the ground anyway, so if audio is your thing, this unit still has a significant role to play. And I believe this is the key to this unit now in the face of Blu-ray: buy it as an audio device, and think of its DVD credentials as a bonus. Output is available on 5.1, and digital, to feed an AV amp/receiver, but I can not comment here as I do not have a surround system.Read full review
the yamaha dvd s2700 was an expensive dvd player, you could have paid up to £900.00 when new. it's claim to fame was amongst the usual fare of sacd, dvd audio, 1080p, dolby/dts decoders, it had a audiophile slant to its cd playback, rare in dvd players outside the arcam / primare models. i have mine plumbed into a arcam a85, into epos m12 speakers, it sounds better with cd than my knackered marantz cd 17 and my old arcam 8se player. the picture from the hdmi cable (1080p) looks better than my ps3 upscaled pictures, the best part is the movie audio though, with a chord pro dac digital cable into my denon 3805 it sounds superb, it digs up fine detail and sounds like you've upgraded your amp and speakers. the player is built to last and looks great on the rack, at the original price it was a tough sell despite its prowess but on ebay you'll pay much less and it makes sense as both a reliable all round player and as your last dvd player before jumping onto the hi def bandwagon.Read full review
This DVD player was easy to set up. I used HDMI connections for the Video and Audio but also connected to my Yamaha AV Receiver using an RCA cable so that I could run the Audio Direct function. Overall, great sound and fantastic picture!
