I mainly bought this camera because I already had a A100 with some lenses. The A580 lacked an extra control wheel and the shutter speed dial is placed in a way that was initially uncomfortable for me to use. That's about all bad things I can say about it. On the plus side it feels lighter than A100, has a great LCD display, shutter is very gentle and it doesn't rock the whole camera when you shoot so I can finally make sharper pictures. Another strong feature is the ISO sensitivity. From my experience 800 is great almost without any post processing, 1600 is good if you remove a bit of noise. 3200 requires noise reduction and slight image size reduction. I encourage everyone to save to ARW format as you can really squeeze a lot more from this camera than you could from JPEG. I am not a professional photographer but A100 let me down many times whereas this one makes taking pictures a very pleasurable activity.Read full review
Mainly I made My decision to by this camera because it has very big resolution, there is also very handy mobile screen.
Now been a Sony user for a while (A-550 A-55 A-850) and now own two A580's. Why two 580's- they are just perfect for me doing wildlife and macro work, I do prefer the optical viewfinder to the digital one on the A-55. The A-580 coupled with good lenses will give stunning results, a superb Sony sensor, some say the best one ever also used in the Nikon D7000 and the Pentax K5. Most Minolta lenses will fit some very good ones can be had, also supported by Tamron/Sigma and Tokina so plenty to choose from. The auto focus works extremely well and the metering also, not many “burnt out highlights” I am an enthusiast of many years and The Sony A-580 does it for me, easy to use if you want full manual control you can or if new to DSLRS full auto you do as much as you want. Priced at a very reasonable pitch around £500 (Pentax K5 and Nikon D7000 over £1000) it leaves plenty to spend on that special lens.Read full review
