We decided to update our banisters, and looked round for some reasonably priced replacements. I must say that fitting them was not that easy. you had to think about equal spacing, getting them upright, and the biggest problem for me was that the spindle tubes were too long, so had to be shortened. The tubes themselves are quite thin walled, so I realised that holding them to cut them down would be a problem. If they were to be cut with a hacksaw it would have been easy to squash the tubes whilst holding them in a vice. Fortunately, I had the answer........a lathe. I turned up a piece of solid steel that was a good tight fit inside the tube. I could then hold this in the lathe chuck and part off the tube at the required length. It was all a bit fiddly, but now that they are fitted we are both very pleased with them. Worth noting that the top and bottom fixings are made of plastic, but you would not realise this when they are fitted and I would not let this worry you.Read full review
