WHITE DIAMOND Ultimately, I found WHITE DIAMOND to be a feature length `Behind The Scenes' for the SHOWGIRL: HOMECOMING tour. We meet the backing singers, dancers, wardrobe assistants, Kylie's manager, vocal trainer & 'friend' Bono (U2). Despite this impressive entourage, nothing interesting rarely happens. Kylie - the reason this documentry exists - comes of as little more then a giggly, smily character in a childrens TV program. She automatically puts on an act whenever she sees a camera. And we see her turn the camera off when she's had enough. Worts and all huh? The only gritty parts are when we see an tired Kylie sleeping on her dresssing room floor. When you see the hundreds of people in WHITE DIAMOND, and consider that her sister is the only person to voice concerns over Kylie's health, you'll be shocked. Money over health and wellbeing. A touching message. If you are interested in the behind the scenes workings that go into a tour, you'll love this. If you love Kylie you'll still love this, though I can't help being somewhat sceptical; her speeches seem practised and she appears a little too `cool' at times. You have to wonder what got cut out. As we've already seen the documentary before, there is bonus material in the form of one of Kylie's `Kids' duets, with sister Dannii. SHOWGIRL: THE HOMECOMING Well, it's here. Kylie's comeback tour (did she ever go away?) is here & no doubt will fly off the shelves. The SHOWGIRL: HOMECOMEING tour is pure entertainment, with fabulous dancers, set pieces & costumes, as well as Ms Minogue herself. I can't help to compare HOMECOMING to the lofty standards of the original SHOWGIRL tour, and I'm afraid it just falls short of the mark. Not that second place is so bad. My biggest bugbears are with `Somewhere Over The Rainbow' and the encore. Having a classic song by another artist is great, but did Kylie really have to have `Rainbow' again? It shows of the fact that Kylie has a decent set of lungs on her, but something new would have been appreciated. It's the same with the encore, which is also the same as the original SHOWGIRL. I'd avoided all gossip of the tour & the reviews before I went to see HOMECOMING, so when the same songs were sung I felt a bit let down after all the excitement & suspense beforehand. And I know the setlist was going to be changed in some places, after all Kylie is making a fresh start in her career. I didn't miss `Please Stay' (it wasn't a great single) and `In Denial' is a great song, but as it's a duet it didn't really work last time, so I can see why it was dropped this time. But on the other hand `Put Yourself In My Place' is a classic song, nearly as good as `Confide In Me' in my opinion, so I really missed it. I also really missed non-single track `Your Disco Needs You`, which is pure fun, and was a real crowd pleaser last time.Read full review
as kylie rocketed back to the upper regions of the charts with her tenth studio album 'X', we get the full documentary 'white diamond' after its sell out cinema release, and at last we get the homecoming tour on dvd.both of these are worth the wait, but to have both together is kylie heaven for the fans!! the first disc, was filmed by her close friend william baker, and follows the superstar after her brave battle with breast cancer, and back onto the stage as she holds her promise to finish off her highly succesful showgirl tour. while the documentary doesnt dig too deeply, for the first time ever we get to follow kylie's journey, and see what makes her tick, plus everything that she has to go through to put on a great show. with laughter, tears, and a fantastic musical score (of course) this is a welcome addition to any kylie collection. extras include the duet kids, sang with her little sister dannii the second disc is the showgirl homecoming concert. kylie is back on top form in melbourne, singing her socks off once again in another pop extravaganza. while some of the songs are the same as on the original showgirl, its great seeing them again - especially when you realise what kylie has gone through between showgirl 1 and showgirl 2. but there are new additions that didnt feature on the original, such as the cracking impossible princess song 'too far', and the brilliant song she wrote with the scissor sisters 'white diamond' that surely should have been a single in its own right. this set is a must for any self respecting kylie fan!!!Read full review
