After our old mini Sony hifi started jumping when playing CD's and the black segments in the orange display stopped showing what was selected. We went to PC World/Curry's to select a replacment, After looking at all the various makes and models we decided on the Sony CMT-MX550i because the ipod dock was on the front, and not the top, this feature allowed us to place the unit in our wall display unit and as we also have a Sony record player, place it on top of the unit as an auxcillary.Having said that I did have to cut off the red and white phono jacks from the record player and replace them with a single 3.5mm jack (Maplins)to plug into the auxcillary socket. It works! Set up was fairly simple and we soon had FM radio, CD ipod, and record player, initally whilst apprieciating that the DAB radio antenna was an 'F' type connector it finally dawned that the white connectors on the two aeriels supplys fitted both the 'F' type (DAB)and the other one (FM)It should be noted that the DAB aeriel needs to be mounted vertically for best reception. Listening pleasure is clear and excellent and we find that volume control 15 is adequate for our lounge/diner. The information display is nice and clear and the shiny black casing finish is very stylish.Read full review
I think the system is fine but do not expect miracles here. I bought this system a couple of weeks ago. It was an ex-display model that I got for 60 quid - very good price, considering that it is still selling for 200+ at some retailers. The only drawback is that the remote control was not included but hey, who cares? :) Overall, it does the job decently at average volume levels. The bass is reasonable but don't push it to the limit if you don't want to hear distortions. Bottom line: I would not recommend paying more than 60-75 pounds for this product.
