For the latest installment of the 2p, Hornby decided to keep with the original design in many ways. The bulk of the molding dates back around 30 years ago. However , there are some positive changes. For example, the motor is now in the loco rather than tender, although this means that traction tyres are now installed on 2 of the main driving wheels. The loco does feature all wheel pick-ups, including the front bogey and all tender wheels , which is excellent and allows for good reliability. However, the buffers aren't sprung, and the cab detail is virtually unchanged from the original moulding with no paintwork inside the cab. Overall, a lovely model. Which will run smoothly and quietly. It's unlikely to win any awards for detail, however does look lovely as part of a train.

Why haven't I given this model a 5 stars? Its because it is an old body shell originally produced by Mainline or Airfix. Whereas the model was good for its time it is still 30 years old and shows its age when compared to Bachmann's 4F. It does lack features such as lamp irons, but once lamps are glued in place it isn't noticeable. After saying that the locomotive drive is far superior and quieter than the older tender drive models and they certainly draw less power. The tender is new and has the plug-in couplings so it is disappointing that they have not changed the front coupling to the same. Although there were some 2P's left with the original Fowler chimney and in particular those based in Scotland, by 1957, the date of the late logo, the majority had the later chimney so it is disappointing that Hornby did not take the opportunity to change this. The dome is also slightly small. However I am still pleased with the purchase and have re-numbered the loco to 40601, which was found on the S&D and will search for a new chimney for it. The engine pulls 6 Hornby LMS Stanier coaches, or 3 LMS Staniers and 3 Maunsells, which is all it would have been expected to haul in real life and it does it with very little power. Overall they are still worth getting because there are no alternatives and are a valuable model for anyone modelling the S&D, the Bristol and Gloucester area and the Glasgow and South Western in the BR era.Read full review

A nice model of the LMS version of the midland railway 2P class 4-4-0 locos built over a number of years culminating in the version here produced after the grouping by the LMSR. As with contemporary LMS locos built at this time it was a left hand drive loco , the midland versions were right hand drive.. This is the latest Hornby version of the model which has been in the catalogue for a number of years, since the Airfix/ Mainline era but had been built with a Tender drive mechanism, which was not as good as conventional loco drive mechanisms. This new version has been rebuilt with a loco drive mechanism which is a great improvement and runs a lot better. All in all a very good buy and at a reasonable price.
