Works really well, now transferring old videos to DVD. Simple to use, easy to follow instructions, however had to buy a scart convertor to allow use with the TV.

I bought this machine as a STAND ALONE VHS to DVD copier, Sorryt but it isn't, you cannot finalise any dubbed copies without connectting the FUNAI to a TV, and you cannot play any unfinalised dubbed copies without connecting the FUNAI to a TV, as they will not play on any other machine. If you don't want to fall into this trap, I suggest, don't buy it!!!

I purchased one of these on ebay in Feb 2008. When delivered it made a horrendous noise from the VHS unit and frequently came up with error message 'Cannot record on this disc' when inserting DVDs. The supplier replaced the unit immediately and the replacement unit worked perfectly for a time, but, 7 months later, it has started to come up with the same error message again. Sometimes it will record on DVD on 2nd or 3rd try, but that's not much use when you want to record live TV, and even then, when you think it's recorded successfully, it may come up with the message at the end of the recording and wipe it all out. Also I have had a number of recordings which it has refused to finalise. I have now got to the point where it is refusing to record anything on DVD, and black/dark scenes on VHS have bright blue flecks/flashes across them. I have contacted the supplier who has told me to return the unit for repair, but this has cost me £11 for carriage. I am awaiting the outcome, but sadly don't expect it to last long even when fixed. Still, you never know, maybe 3rd time lucky!Read full review
This is not an all-singing all-dancing machine but it does what it promises to do and it does it very very well. Slightly limited in format (only DVD-R or -RW) and some of the older DVD players can't cope with -R, but it is easy to use following the well written handbook, and as I only wanted a machine to transfer over 1000 VHS tapes accumulated since 1978, it is excellent and simple to use. Great for direct recording from air - either via RF or SCART or S-VHS leads the only problem is that you record and finish - no pausing to remove unwanted ads etc, but with DVD-RW you can use the DVDs again and again. The quality of the finished article on DVD at best speed is better than the original VHS as it seems to clean up a lot of the drop-outs which have accumulated over 30 years. I bought my first one from Currys which stopped recording after 9 months and had the DVD player replaced - the replacement stopped after 13 months - still played back, VCR worked perfectly but would not record, so I bought this from E-Bay as a replacement and now I am flying at a much less cost. It may now be a somewhat out-of-date DVD recorder, but if what you need it for is as I have described above, it has to be the best value around - titling etc is simple following the book instructions. Like me - sometimes the oldies are amongst the best and at nearly 70 I still find this machine child's-play.Read full review
