I own and operate a number of these license-free radios; they are decently robust and extremely easy to use and maintain, with good battery life and accessories galore available to suit every need. They can be programmed using a PC which gives added flexibility and security in day-to-day use. Another major advantage of these babies is the fact that, with a few aftermarket spare parts and some basic soldering skills, their performance can be boosted significantly. They are now sadly discontinued, so for every one of these I run across on ebay, I do my best to grab it because they're a bargain both price-wise and performance-wise.
The Kenwood TK3201/TK3202 Protalk PMR radios are best in class for several reasons. Apart from the design and construction which are very well done, these radios have a 16 hour battery life with the 29n battery and 20 hours with the 45L battery. Audio quality is crystal clear on both transmit and receive, even at speed in a car or on a motorbike. Being fully programmable its very easy to change the channel allocations and tone squesh setting to set your own subchannel groups or to program into the same as your friends. Without need for an LCD screen. The rugged design means they are atleast splash proff, i use mine for motorcycle training and the radios sometimes end up wet inside the bags round students waists, A wipe down with a cloth and they are good to go. 8 hours of use in damp wet conditions and ive had no problems. I even left one on the garden wall accidently in a rain storm, a quick shake to remove most of the water and that was it..... Charging time for these from flat is only a few hours so you really dont need a charger for every battery either, and ive had no indication of 'memory effect' reducing the batterys life. and my oldest battery was mauufactured in 2001. These great units may be larger and more expensive than the cheaper smaller leisure alternatives but atleast you'll be happy in the knowledge that they will last all day on 1 battery, not be ruined in bad weather and will survive a fall on the ski slopes far better than the £20 cheap alternative your mates are using. Profesionally built for daily use every dayRead full review
The Kenwood TK-3201 protalk radio from kenwood is by far our most popular 446Mhz license free radio, we sell a lot of them, they are extremely popular with hiking parties and generally outdoors people. the construction is shared from the commercial TK range the TK3201 having the exact same construction as the TK3101/3201 which are the longest production run radio kenwood have ever had, they are simply excellent. the Protalk is a more substantial radio than any of the cheap radios there are only 4 other radios on the market that compete with the kenwood on quality, the Vertex VX146 & 246 the Icom 446 & the new motorola licence free radio (replacement to the XTN) If your looking for a license free radio unit which will last you a long time and give exceptional performance this is it, its downside is its price.. you can expect to pay up to £160 for one of these units, but you'll not need to replace it for 3 years thanks to their 24 month warranty, we have units that are 5 years old that we still service regularly for customers. A top buy from the licence free range.Read full review
A company that is a real class act. As I required a radio for my autocom system the first place to look was ebay . Having found the right model and make ,it all came down to how old and what price. The TK-3201 Kenwood fits the bill and as this model links up to my autocom Pro-rider system via a interface it all works very well. The cover while riding has a lot to do with the weather and if the ground is flat or up in the mountains. The autocom system is linked to the Zumo Garmin as well so both work together as an idea package. The Kenwood radio is fine and a better way to go than bluetooth because you don't need a mobile phone signal with the Kenwood Radio system. Great product..
i havnt brought any protalk 3201 radio off ebay but i own a 4 of them and they are a very reliable radio i have 4 of these radio and i have taken them skiing, to work and let my kids play with them, and they still work fine. it is a license free radio so you dont have to worry about pay for the use of the radio. the radios have a coded frequency, so other radio users that are on the same frequency cant interfere with your conversation they have 16 channels bilt in over all if you have a chance to buy a pair there worth what they are
