Having had one of these machines for several years it was time to replace it as it was having problems. Not being the most technically gifted I chose to buy the same machine but in a condition that appeared little used. Being used to it I find it easy to use to record from TV or my Video camera plus transferring old video tapes onto DVD's. To date I am happy with my purchase.

This is my third Sony RDR-HX860 DVD Recorder and, in my opinion, one of the best models that Sony has introduced. Its outstanding feature, and the one that I cherish most, is the fact that one can create a playlist directly on the HDD. This is extremely useful and convenient for editing purposes. It is quite unique in this aspect as no forthcoming machines have exhibited this feature.

Easy to use, ut takes a long time to load a disc. Recordings are very good and play back also.

Needing to replace a faulty Sony HXD560 DVD recorder, I chose the HXD860 which is an updated version. It has a 160GB hard drive, twice the capacity of my old one plus an HDMI output. I particularly value the multitude of recording modes on the Sony recorders since they make fitting titles onto a DVD simplicity itself which other makes don't seem to give. For example, after the HQ (high-quality) mode there's HSP then SP, LSP & ESP in descending order of quality (& 3 more after that). I use LSP mode most of all since the definition is perfectly good for recording long feature films onto DVD. Although I have an HD-ready TV, I havn't noticed any improvement using the HDMI connection to it but the picture quality is still very good via this or the SCART interface. Because I'm already familiar with the controls, operating the recorder is simple but it's not complicated for anyone who can read a manual & is prepared to persevere. Unlike some other makes, the Electronic Program Guide is free of adverts & presents the information clearly. A small gripe is that navigating menus & functions can seem a little slow & 'clunky' at times compared to something like a modern PC. The one thing that many people criticize about these machines is the noise from the fan but with the TV sound at normal levels, it causes me no trouble at all. I can't recommend these units highly enough & it's a great pity Sony seems to have stopped manufacturing DVD recorders of this type.Read full review
