The CD-48 is one a very few CD players that utilises the TDA1549T DAC chip. It sounds very good in standard trim but is also a good candidate for modification. An unusual feature is the volume control on the remote. Due to the case being half empty (or half full) there's plenty of room for a valve output stage and an extra transformer to provide a separate supply to the chip. The consensus amongst the mods published on the web is that the chip needs a separate power source as it originally shares the same supply as every other component which can't be good. The simplest mod is to bypass all the analogue gubbins and take the signal straight from the chip (which contains a pair of single op-amps) to the RCA sockets via good quality DC-blocking capacitors. This mod or going via a valve stage will bypass the volume control but is certain to improve the sound. To summarise, it is as good, or better than, most CD players which sell on eBay for twice the average price that these go for. The downside for modders is that the TDA1549 is fairly rare and info is scant on the web, unlike the TDA1541 for example. Update: Upgrading the 5v power supply to the chip (as described on lampizator.eu/.../tda1549 and skycoral.com) improved the CDP dramatically with a wider and more focused sound-stage and even better clarity. Taking the signal directly from the chip, bypassing all the analogue stage except the chip's built-in op-amps, also produced a slightly cleaner signal. This is at slightly lower volume than the std output but this is not a bad thing. The volume control still works on this output which is a surprise.Read full review
Great second hand buy for modifications. Has great transport and good DACs but sound is very bright and harsh in treble like many Marantz models. This can be easily rectified by removing the last Op Amp which will give it a warmer sound and take the player into audiophile quality.
