This was fun to use, and the solutions end up oversaturated so you get small crystal starting to grow the same day or the next day. Then you have to wait for them to get bigger, but the week we have waited is not long enough. Patience is needed! There appear to only be 2 compounds, with different colour dyes mixed in them. As a scientist myself, I know that this will only lead to 2 different shape crystals. However, we will still enjoy them. There are only 3 lids for the tubs, so if you want to keep the dust out you can only do 3 crystallisations. I suppose you could use cling film over the top instead. We have started the yellow and blue crystals. The yellow is good, but the blue solution is too dark to see whether anything is growing. I guess we'll just have to wait for a big surprise when it does grow. The instructions say to use a saucepan that will never be used for any food stuff again. I didn't want to do that, so we just measured boiling water from the kettle into the measuring flask, and dissolved the powder in there. This wouldn't work for the larger experiments because the mearuring flask is too small, but I'm sure I can find an old jam jar or something to do it in. This kit is rated as age 10+. It comes with a pair of goggles, that are too small for a 5 year old (who is quite petite). However, no matter, according to the instructions they are not to be used as eye protection anyway! What on earth are they doing in the box then? This half hearted nod towards safety, while telling you they are not a safety device, is the only thing that lets the kit down. They're being used for dress up in our house.Read full review

OK, not the greatest thing in the world but it's decent value for money. We've had fun making the solutions up and to be fair some of them have produced decent crystals, you just have to persevere. 4/5 stars is very fair given the price.

Did not realise that the water needed heating (I have an induction hob, so had to buy a special pan), but the crystals have been growing really well.
