Quick delivery, easy assembly, strong construction, and adjustable spreading rate a good feature. However, I do not think that the spreading rate was accurate. I used the correct setting for a named fertiliser, having measure the lawn area. I used over twice the quantity of fertiliser expected, which is costly. This was more than could be accounted for by possible slight overlap and minor spillage. At least I can check spreading rate next time by going over a polythene sheet and weighing. The spreading rate can then be adjusted for all future uses.

Bought this to spread lawn sand but it did not work. It was easy to put together, and the instructions are pretty simple in that you fill it, set it at the right spread rate and walk up and down your lawn. Except that the only rates they give you are for their own products. You get a little leaflet with various Evergreen products, and the correct setting to use for the different spreaders they make. There was one for lawn sand but it was for a different spreader. I contacted Evergreen who informed me that this spreader had not been tested with lawn sand but to measure a plastic sheet to 1 sq mt, fill the spreader with the correct amount of sand and see if it covers the sheet, adjusting it until I get the correct setting. This did not work as the sand gets stuck in the mechanism, a plastic sliding bar with holes in, starts to jam up and while you are trying to close it the sand is pouring out of the bottom. In the end I gave up, as I thought I was going to break the plastic setting knob. I have since tried it with their grass seed and that seemed to work a little better, although I am not overly impressed as, although I used Evergreen grass seed it did not give the setting for it on the leaflet nor on the seed box, so again it was a bit hit and miss with guesswork. I might end up selling it on.Read full review

Having tried the spreader only once, I was immediately concerned with the amount of fertiliser being used. I rang Scotts' advice line, who advised me that I should be starting each run by bending down to set the rate gauge, at the same time moving off at a good walking pace! And I should then move the lever back to zero at the end of each run. They also suggested I check the flow rate of the machine, by spreading a sheet of plastic on the ground and collecting the fertiliser. This I did, and the very action of setting the lever, walking two metres and bending down to switch the lever to 'off', resulted in over twice the recommended flow rate. The excess comes at the beginning and end of each run, when the spreader is stationary. Fortunately I have borders at both ends of the lawn, where you can see the small piles of product being wasted. If you have a lawn which requires several short runs, the waste really builds up. I contacted Scotts again, who could only repeat their previous advice, which is of little use to a 70 year old! They did tell me that they do produce a spreader ( more expensive) where you can set the flow rate first, then operate a start control on the handle as you move off. OK, this spreader did not cost the Earth, and I have yet to decide what to do with it!Read full review

Old designs tended to clog easily but this spreader seems better designed so that it doesn't. It is wider than I expected making treatment a quick process on typical lawns - useful in unpredictable summers when ideal times between rain days are scarce and spare time is equally scarce.

It’s a poor design. The rotating shaft is made of painted mild steel and corrodes after a short period of use. The drive wheel refuses to turn. All of this in spite of best efforts to clean the product and remove as much of the grass feed as possible. The drive shaft corrodes at the ends and at places along the shaft. The solution is to make the internal rotating shaft of plastic or high quality stainless steel to prevent corrosion. Alternatively design the product so that the wheels and shaft can be easily removed for cleaning. All round a huge disappointment. Allan
