The Nikon 300mm F/2.8 G ED IF AF-S VR AF Lens is a masterpiece of design lightweight beautifully made and super sharp wide open to stopped down. The VR works so well you forget it's there anf the autofocus is fast and accurate. This a lens that whether you buy new or used are unlikely to lose an money selling in a few years time. A great investment.

A superb lens and great value for money at about £1000.00 GBP. F2.8 when you need it. Focus is a little on the slow side but there are focus limiters and I use mine for landscape and motorsport. You usually have a good idea where the cars or motorcycles will be so the focus limiter stops hunting. The shallow depth of field wide open is superb and the bokeh 'to die for'. In focus images literally 'pop' out of the background. Contrast, sharpness and colour balance is spot on for me. The lens handles very well and is built to withstand mortar fire. The reversible lens hood is really necessary with such a large front element and it does its job really well. Buy one if you can find one. The 300mm f4.0 versions are a joy to use but this brute is on another level. The only really satisfactory Nikon teleconverter to use here is the TC-14B which restricts you to manual focus but gives you a 420mm f4.0 equivalent. Two 1.4 converters from Tamron and Kenko will give you autofocus - they are supposed to be reasonable performers. The teleconverter Nikon recommended was the TC16A - but be careful it only worked with a very limited number of AF camera bodies of the era (e.g. F3AF) Safer to avoid it. In the digital age the safe options are the TC-14B or the Kenko or Tamron offerings. Low end digitals like the D40 will not be able to autofocus so check with Nikon before you buy. Spoil yourself this is a brilliant lens on Nikon FX format on DX it offers the equivalent of a 450mm f2.8 and if that is not enough it becomes a 630mm f4.0 with one of the 1.4 teleconverters. That is good enough for me and the loss of performance is quite acceptableRead full review
