A bit annoying and patronising and not overly informative
I bought this book to get a balanced view of both the differences and similarities between western and eastern medicine and practices and the two approaches to optimising fertility. Unfortunately it didn't quite meet my expectations. I have a lot of faith in Chinese medicine but this book mostly consists of anecdotal 'evidence' and very little in the way of helpful, constructive or ground-breaking advice. According to this book, a 'normal' menstrual cycle should ALWAYS be every 26-32 days, characterised by a very specific flow and colour of blood, lasting no more than five or six days, and there should be no pain/cramps. Anything deviating from these somewhat strict menstrual parameters indicates that something is not quite right with your womanly bits. In that case, myself and every ... In that case, myself and every single female I know (including those with pretty much tip-top fertility and numerous kids to prove it), have something fundamentally wrong with them. What nonsense! It goes on about visualisations and relaxation techniques, 'believing in yourself' and all that, which is all well and good but how can we believe in ourselves and our ability to produce wonderful healthy children when the author has already told us that something's wrong with us if we have painful, irregular/unpredictable, too-heavy or not-quite-heavy-enough periods? And then in another part of the book she goes on about how often we should wee (and poo), and what they should look like, too. Charming. Along with a selection of delightful, wholesome recipe suggestions (nettle soup, anyone?) A lot of this book is painfully patronising. The basic advice throughout is: don't smoke. Don't drink. Avoid caffeine. Avoid junk food. Sleep a lot (but not too much). Take some exercise (but not too much). Eat greens, oily fish, etc. The usual blah-blah "hark at me I am so knowledgeable and fecund", that we have heard a million times before and that anyone with half a brain knows already. It's a shame because the genuinely helpful and insightful stuff is buried under a whole load of "stating the bleeding obvious" and making us feel like we are letting ourselves down if we feel anything other than totally relaxed and at ease with ourselves and our bodies and our diets and our lifestyles and our sex lives. Sadly it does not allay our fears and disappointments about the often cruel tricks that our bodies can so often play on us - no matter how well we look after them. If making a baby was as easy as being relaxed and healthy and having lots of orgasmic sex with an adored life partner, the world would doubtless be a much better place and every child on earth would be wanted and cherished. Truth is, babies tend to be more often made by those very women who are definitely not and never likely to be "Qi-balanced" and wouldn't know (or give a stuff about) a Yin from a Yang, a Singapore Sling from a 'Jing' or a reverse cowgirl from a praying mantis. Incidentally, I find the dedication at the start very insensitive and more than a little smug: "For my parents, whose great love conceived five daughters". Does the author not realise that the vast majority of her readers will be women who are in long-term, loving, committed relationships and yet unable to conceive just ONE child? Emma Cannon must be aware of the implications of every word she writes in a book with an emotive and rather lofty title like "The Baby-Making Bible".
