This is a solid beginners lens - the manufacturing quality is good and it's easy to use. For the price, it's an exceptional lens and gives a very good picture quality.
The Canon 28mm F/2.8 is a solid, compact and light wide angle lens, that is a good 'walk-around' lens and can be useful for photos of groups of people. I bought this lens for its compact size and usefulness for going on short trips. The version I bought is showing it's age a little but still a solid, reliable and well built lens. Takes very crisp, clear and quality images. Struggles somewhat in low light and indoors even though an F/2.8 but this is a minor quibble. Not as quick or quiet as newer lenses.
I took on board various reviews before buying this lens and some tests on you tube. I'm using it on a Canon D60 so it becomes a 42 mm standard lens due to the 1.6x crop factor. Got the lens for a £100 and found it good value. I did a lens test next to my Canon 20-35 lens and the 28mm lens won when compared with the 20-35 at the 28mm setting at all f-stops and of course the 28mm goes to 2.8 whereas the 20-35 is only f4. My copy didn't suffer the chromatic aberration issues other testers found with their copies so there may well be quality differences between copies. Maybe I got a good copy but couldn't but either way it delivers the goods. Not sure how good it would be on a full frame 5D but probably better than expected. At the price you really can't go wrong.
This lens is a little gem and good for the price we got it. We have shot a number of videos using a canon 7D and the quality is really nice , a classic prime look.
Super little lens. Don't be put off by the fact that these lenses don't have a USM focussing motor. The focus is fast and accurate even if it does make a slightly scratchy noise when operating. The lens is sharp although you'd do better to get it to F5.6-8 for the best results. I've got a Canon EF 28-70 f3.5-4.5 MkII which is superb but this prime lens out performs it. Give it a go. For around £100 it is a vast saving on the current list price of a new Canon EF 28mm lens.
