The Roberts R881 is a fine radio - mainly because it's made by Sangean a radio manufacturer - 'par excellence', (as Hercule Poirot would say); Founded in 1974 Taiwan-based Sangean has manufactured radios for such famous brands as AudioStar, C.Crane, Eton, Grundig, Magnavox, Mitsumi, Panasonic, Philips, Radio Shack, Realistic, Roberts, Saisho, and Tandy. So its no surprise to discover that the quality built into the Roberts R881 is actually based pn a Sangean ATS-404; (reassuring really), when you realise that the reputation of Roberts Synthesized/PLL (Phase Locked Loop) portables is founded on the robust products from Sangeam, based in R.O.C. (Republic of China), formerly the island of Formosa). First launched in 1998, the Sangean ATS-404 is a single-conversion FM, AM 2.3-26.1 MHz radio, complete with 45 memories, digital frequency readout, 45 station memories and a clock-time to make it a real travelling companion. Using the portable A5 book format, The Roberts R881 is eminently packable in even the most modest personal luggage, a built-in lock switch is invaluable to prevent the radio from being powered-on when too-snugly packed with clothes or other personal items; this switch disables the keypad and all other push-buttons on the set which is also handy if you want keep the radio powered-on during clumsy bedtime handling! Performance-wise the R881 is tenacious at grabbing signals from around the globe; now that the BBC world-service has given-up even the mildest of competition for international listeners, the gold standard in Global English Service Broadcasting is amply delivered by China Radio International (CRI) over a generous spread of Short wave frequencies, all of which which can be programmed into the R881's memory storage for a complete 24-hour reception of CRI. Powered by 4 AA (LR6) batteries, the R881 is no battery hogg, users can expect some 20-30 hours of short wave listening per quartet of batteries. The R881 is very user-friendly thanks to Sangean's in-depth R&D, a back light illuminates the LCD Frequency display for energy saving listening. The desired Frequency can be simply punched-in via a telephone-style key-pad for precise tuning, the Synthesized PLL tuning delivers spot-on reception of both AM & FM stations, with Stereo also being delivered via a headphone socket. When locked on to a station a LCD 'Tuning' logo display to indicate the R881 has a serious 'grip' of the frequency. Overall the R881 is a quality DX (Distance) short wave receiver, a pop-out stand at the rear even makes it a stable addition to any bedside cabinet or work surface. So start planing an eBay Search for Roberts/ Sangean PLL multi-band radios and you'll be joining the global shortwave audience - stay connected and you'll have even more news-you-can-use!Read full review
The Roberts R881 is a rebadged Sangean ATS404. Sangean are one of the major suppliers of first class radio products to many other world renown brands. This particular model includes FM (stereo though headphones), medium wave and full coverage of the shortband wavebands used for consumer radio. It is supplied with a BBC booklet detailing all the frequencies for the World Service. Stereo on FM is very good even through the integral mono loudspeaker. Use a reasonable set of phones and it it excellent. MW is subject to the usual problems associated with AM broadcast and there is no Long wave provision. It has a dual clock system which permits a local time setting plus retention of UK time. There is an alarm system which includes a snooze control and a setting for either radio or buszzer (this starts at a low level and gets gradually louder - the Humane Wake System). There also a radio countdown sleep facility. It is suppled with a comprehensive manual and a UK power supply. Battery (4 x AA) useage time is good considering the facilies available. For reasons unknown Roberts have now discontinued this model but it is still currently on sale as the original Sangean product.Read full review
