Its big and heavy - they are good points as far as I'm concerned - so its easy to hold and steady. Picture quality is lovely with low noise and smooth tones.Pictures are a good size, viewfinder large and bright and controls where you expect them. There are no modern facilities like image stabilisation and EVF. The shutter is just a touch quieter than a pistol but the camera is a joy to use, beautifully made and delivers lustrous images.

An excellent camera at a superb price now because of their age. By one with a reasonably low shutter count which has been looked after and you'll get years of pleasure from it. The picture quality is superb, and colours are very well reproduced. I switched fro an eos 7d to this camera because I wanted full frame, and the well known problems witn AF on the 5D Mkll made me switch to Nikon. I'm glad I did.

There's something special about this camera... Or should I say there are only 2 features which aren't special on this camera... The weight and shutter noise. Stack it up to all new cameras and become frustrated that none of them have the handling, ease of use and the beautiful image quality this has at such an affordable price point. It's wonderful and I'm really really struggling to find a more modern camera which won't disappoint me after using this. I'll never get rid of mine. Buy it. It's worth 3 times whatever you'll pay.

Do not hesitate buy a used D700 and have access to all of Nikons great lenses going back 25 years. You will be astounded by how good 12megapixels really is with rich well exposed saturated colours and as sharp as the lens can give. Only down side is the size and weight. You could knock nails in with this camera and with the additional grip added it is a 2 handed job to hold. It is also quite noisey when press the shutter. Why Nikon went away from the button layout on this and the D300 I don't understand it so much more ituative to use. Anyone who knows will tell you this is a great camera and will easily beat a 3000 or 5000 series Nikon Camera hands down. I currently have a D300 which is just as good 1/3 of the price and a lot lighter. Get either today you won't regret it.
