This is a wonderfully funny film and its breathtaking pace means you need to watch it a few times to catch all the humour. At times I felt guilty at laughing as the secondary theme of the story is a man on death row and the crooked mayor and sheriff's attempts to ensure he hangs so as to guarantee their re-election. The joy of the piece is the amazing interplay and chemistry between Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell as editor and star reporter respectively. She is trying to escape the seedy world of a city newspaper and settle down with hapless Ralph Bellamy although deep down she knows that is never going to happen. Grant is determined to keep his star reporter, and ex-lover, and is not above resorting to sending Bellamy to gaol to obtain his goal. This film was later re-made by the great Billy Wilder as Hold The Front Page with his then favourite duo of Walter Matteau & Jack Lemon with Lemon in the Russell role (I am not suggesting they were ex-lovers though!) For me His Girl Friday was and is the definitive version and although now sixty eight years old is still fresh, very funny and very dark dealing as it does with the underbelly of politics and the depths people, politicians and newspaper editors, will stoop to to achieve their desiresRead full review
